At West Wilson Aesthetics, we use the PicoSure® laser to treat and remove melasma more quickly and effectively than creams, skincare, and other treatments.
PicoSure® uses ultrashort pulses of energy, minimizing heat transfer to the surrounding skin. This means pigment removal with little to no collateral damage to the unaffected areas. Unlike other lasers that reduce pigment transfer, PicoSure® disrupts the pigment in the upper layers of skin. This can markedly clear melasma within a few sessions.
Melasma is a benign chronic hyperpigmentation disorder that causes dark blotches on the skin. This discoloration is caused by overproduction of pigment in the skin that is stimulated by certain triggers, such as sun exposure, hormones, and skin irritation.
PicoSure® lasers for melasma removal can help remove unwanted pigmentation on your hands, face, or anywhere else on your body. The PicoSure® Laser is an uber targeted form of laser. It creates short pulses of laser energy that go straight to the pigment of your melasma, breaking it apart so your body can naturally dispose of it.
Melasma treatment time ranges between 5 to 12 minutes, depending on the extent of pigmentation. We typically space treatments 3-6 weeks apart.
First, ensure you stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water in the days leading up to the appointment. Hydrated skin tends to respond better to laser treatments. Second, if you are taking blood-thinning medications, consult with your healthcare provider about their use prior to the appointment. Finally, on the day of the appointment, make sure your skin is clean and free of any makeup, lotions, or creams. This will allow the laser to penetrate the skin more effectively, leading to better results.
In the context of melasma treatments, PicoSure® is well tolerated as the energy we use is very low. No numbing cream is required. After PicoSure®, your skin will be red for 1-3 hours. Recovery thereafter is uneventful.
Between two to five, spaced 3 to 6 weeks apart. The lower number represents lighter skin types with superficial melasma, whilst more sessions are required if you have darker skin type with deeper pigmentation.
The process of using a PicoSure® laser for melasma is safe and painless. The primary irritant in most laser treatments is the extended exposure to heat, which the PicoSure® laser system reduces. However, those undergoing the treatment should understand that there is always a chance that it may not work for them and their melasma could worsen in the future.
